View Full Version : ipods and car!!!
I want an ipod, want to be able to tune into car
Was thinking about ITRIP?
are they any good?
also - I love the NANO IPOD! its cool, but will it work with itrip? so far from searching it doesnt look like it does but can anyone confirm???
And whats the benefit of those belkin ipod adaptors over the itrips? or itrips over beklin?
help!
cheers guys! (IPOD NEWBIE)
The iTrip is good but you only get FM quality at best and it can be tricky to find a clean frequency.
I have this setup which i'm really pleased with:
Alpine 9851R Headunit

I havn't fiitted it wrongly, the HU has a tilt feature so I can set it to be constantly at that angle, the screen is easier to see (no glare) and the controls easier to use.
iPod - Connected via KCA420i iPod Interface Adaptor

When connected into the car the iPod is charged up, the buttons on the iPod do not function at all. Everything is controlled via the head unit.
It cost me just under £300 (excluding the iPod, £500 all in) for the set up. It works well, little bit slow browsing but I use playlists which load very quickly.

itrip's fantastic, can't really notice the difference between CD and ipod (especially with road noise into the equation) and you can use it anywhere
get the full frequency list, use 87.5 and you'll find no problems
but then it does depend on where you are? my brother didnt get the itrip wasnt working properly?
i use the cassete adaptor for now, looking to get a proper kit...doing it all the same time...speaker/ipod kit/GPS but looking around, anyone got/knows good places for any of these, email me please :)
i dont think the ipod nano is good overall...it looks nice, for size etc...but practically it doesnt hold a lot...1gb i think? for someone like me i use 5gb on my ipod :Cops
the mini is £140 and is 4gb which holds about 1000 songs? not bad, plus the size is good, not too small, and not too big. the cassette adaptor is something to use for a temporary solution, u would get annoyed with it quickly, it starts to make a clicking noise quite loudly after a while, and fiddly wire to deal with aswell!
CPW have carkits for about £100-£150, they look good, as its direct so you will get better sounds quality than most adaptors etc.
the nano come in 2gb and 4gb
they do look sweet!
anyone got the belkin ipod links?
they are hard wired into car and come with a cradle!

the reason i got an itrip is that i'm quite frequently driving different cars.
@ faz, if you choose a frequency so high up or low that there's no chance of anything being broadcasted on it then you'll be sorted. 108.0 is unused as far as i know, but we have local stations quite near it so you can get distortion. 87.5 however seems to never have anything on it (driven all over the country on 87.5 without ever losing signal or getting distortion on the ipod)
i don't use playlists so i have to keep adjusting things on the ipod itself, means it can be moved easily so either i can operate it (having pulled in at the side of the road of course ;)) or a passenger can do it.
can a nano be hard wired?
or will itrip work with one of them??
cant find owt on ebay or
everythingipod site?
dog danglies! ;) you can even use it as your phone (if you fone has bluetooth)
and...my next purchase

bargain at 280 delivered in my opinion!!
theres 3 different ways to link the ipod to the radio - itrip, fm modulator hardwired and some other wired option which goes in the back of the stereo.
the fm modulator version is the cheaper version with the other option being a higher price. my uncle fits these into cars in the north west think he said looking at £150 for fm version and £230 or so for the hardwired into the input in back of stereo
Fm modulator is £20 in maplins. That gives an RCA input through the FM.
I use one of these

and it works very well.
Plugs into cigarette lighter, holds the ipod secure and also charges the battery at the same time.
You tune to whatever frequency you like, and the sound quality is pretty good.
Easy to move from car to car as well, which is what i do quite a lot, and was my reason for buying the cradle.
