engine management light

hi

got a 96 celica 1.8 here and the engine management light was coming on yesterday every 5 minutes and then going off....today its on all the time now...
i know its probably something electrical but anyone any idea what the usual problem might be with these cars,,,

dont want to be going to the main dealer and charged heavily if its something i could fix myself
