Tried those links, and was well impressed, I managed to get hold of the ME boot disc image and transferrred to disc, but still no joy the laptop does not respond to any keypresses, I think I have really messed this up now!!
Does any one know which key makes the computer step through it's start up routine is it F7 or F8, if so then that too doesn't work??

Its well worth signing up, they are really good and respond quickly... oh... and its free... :p

I got a reply from them recently asking me if I fixed it myself, which I thought was a bit strange?

ME should act as its own boot disk, thus open the drive and pop the disk in and switch the comp of at the plug, then on. turn it on. the machine should then give you some options in dos.
boot from CD
or
boot from cd to dos
(or something to this effect.)
go to the dos option and format the drive from there.
need anymore help, just ask.

Well I put the me disc in but all I get is system halted and a blue screen, on it it says:-
While initializing device IFSMGR, the Microsoft Installable file system manager cannot find the helper driver. Please ensure that IFSHELP.SYS is installed.
The only problem is that with the system halted, I can do nothing, even turning off and back on gives me the same screen?

right it sounds like your command files need reinstalling. do you know anyone with 98 second edition, cos get an emergency boot disk (floppy) from them. pop it in start up. all windows runs off the same stuff (post XP). hopefully you will get a dos prompt or a dos action of some sort. if you get a prompt, check that it is A:\
then put in
A:\command.com
or
A:\command.exe
or
A:\/?
(sorry havendnt done this for a while)
if it renstalls the files sucsessfully then the ME cd trick may work.
i will keep thinking so if it dont work, post.
